I have the activation for RS Logix in my laptop. however, i need to move it back to floppy disk because i want to format my PC. and i lost the original Floppy. and I couldn't move it to another floppy. Is this possible

I have moved my activation to a thumb drive. It worked perfect. never tried a floppy. hope this helps

Are you using EVmove32 to move the activation? If you want to move the activation to a floppy disk, it has to be the original master disk. However, you can also move the activation to another computer hard drive over the network. EVmove32 requires a drive letter, so you'll have to map the remote drive to a drive letter on your computer.

You used to be able move to a mapped network drive, I also recall seeing something about moving to a usb style memory stick on the Rockwell knowledgebase. I never tried moving to a usb connected hdd, I assume this wouldn't be a problem.

You could connect to a network and move it to a network drive, format the drive and then move it back.

If you are connected to a network, or have a loopback connector, then share you A: drive (FDD) and then network map the shared FDD. It then just appears as a networked drive and EVMove will move it, and then when you go to move it back on it will work as a normal move from A:.

I have moved Rockwell/Allen-Bradley licenses using evmove to USB hard drives, and mapped network drives. The USB hard drives do not register as "removable media" like flash drives do. For the flash drives, it sounds like you need to use a version of evmove that is made for flash drives.

My problem is that my notebook crashed and reformatted, therefore the license file was not moved/backed up. Now after reinstalling RSLogix, I have a message that "the copy protection license for the application could not be located. The error from the license server is: 2"

I have tried to consult with AB regarding this matter and they said that in order to retrieve my license key, I have to purchase a support contract (TechConnect). In my opinion this is not fair as the software belongs to me. Anyone faced this kind of problem before? Please help.

Thanks.

We don't do enough AB projects to justify a service contract. I have found that talking to the local vendor can sometimes open the back door, they call Rockwell and patch you into the conversation. Once you get to talk to Rockwell support they seem very helpful.

Well, fair or not, that's probably just how it is. If you read the license carefully, the software does not belong to you, it belongs to them, and unless you pay the yearly bribe they don't have to help. You might be able to pay for a single incident, but I can't say for sure. It's been a while since I had to deal with them on an issue like this.

It also depends on how new your license files are. If you have the old style that uses the evmove facility then it's easier to recover than the new factorytalk licenses. Or maybe it's just that I'm more familiar with the old system.

Regardless, Rockwell is interested in getting that yearly support contract, and leaving you hanging out on a limb is one way to get it. Maybe someone else has more encouraging news, but that's my experience.

You did not buy the software. You bought a license to use it. The terms of the license are very clear. If you want tech support after a certain period of time, or software updates, it costs money. They are very upfront about this. If you chose not to purcahse the support contract, you are not eligible for software updates or tech support.

Hello,

Hope it's not too late...
We had the same problem 4 times (we have several licenses or RSLogix 500 installed) and had no problems sending email to RA support informing serial number, product key and dongle flex-id number. They sent us the replacing license files in less then 24 hours.

We have no support contract.
