Flame proof vs Explosion proof

We have asked Vendor to give an explosion proof Temperature txr suitable for Zone 2, Class I & Temp Class T3. But vendor is offering Flame-proof for this application. Is it acceptable? Can Somebody compare these two certifications?

Flameproof design is one of the explosion protection technique extensively used for light fittings, JBs, motors in hazardous areas. This is certified by IEC but is predominantly followed in India and is also governed by local IS standards.

However, hazardous area specification you have asked for the transmitter is quite common and you should get it (ex-proof) from most of the reputed manufacturers.

The difference is in name only - and the detailed standards for each. They both use the same protection principle of preventing any ignition effects from propagating from the enclosure interior to the external atmosphere.

Hello from Deodatta Koli. Please let us know what do you mean by Temperature txr. Flameproof is the word normally used by Asian & other commonwealth countries. Explosion proof is an American Word. EExd is used by all EU. There is no difference except term. You can log into www.flametechindia.com for further information.

In brief, we would like to inform you that as India has adopted IEC in the year 2004, now the certification are in line with IEC: 60079.1 as well as IS:2148. Now again we would like to inform you that the CMRI, Dhanbad is abolished by Govt. of India & it has become now Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Resaerch (CIMFR, Dhanabd)
