Siemens MPI Network

I have 4 Siemens S7-300 PLC's (with MPI/Profibus ports). I would like to tie these PLC's to each other as well as to a central HMI PC using MPI. What are the hardware/software requirements to do this? (Let's assume I want to use OPC for the HMI to PLC interface.)

Hi anonymous,

you will need a CP5611 PCI card, altenatively you can use a Serial MPI cable (cheaper).

The SIMATIC NET software package contains OPC driver for all Siemens S7 communication types (MPI, Profibus, Ethernet).
Personally I find that it is a labyrinth of various configuration tools that are hard to navigate.

If you only want to make some HMI functions and/or do some time-based datalogging, then consider also Protool Pro. Is is easier to get into and cheaper than any other solution. There might be other HMI packages that you might consider if they have buil-in S7 connectivity.

Best regards,

you can use cp5611 card for dest computer! MPI network is cheap and convenient. distance is a problem, but repeater will solve it!
