Understandin generator action at grid failure

I am going to revamp generator(ABB/siemens) turbine speed controller "Voith TurCon" from 1989.Based on my understanding that while generator is coupled and grid is decoupled the controller is instructed to use fixed set-point of speed to generate (50 HZ) and control mode PI(proportional Integral) and when generator is decoupled the set-point is free upto operator selection.

When grid and generator is coupled, speed is fixed based on grid and setpoint is also free to operator ti control generator share (MW) but the mode can't be PI so it switch to P (Proportional only) to avoid incremental increase in steam due to offset between fixed speed and operator higher setpoint.

Electrical department provide 2 free contacts to indicate generator/grid coupling/decoupling

We are selecting between new Voith/ABB(AC800M)/siemens controllers

Is my understanding is right. What is the modern alternative for my situation?
