Large area protection

I frequently see applications that create hazardous areas that are fairly large. Examples include large robots that need access to a large radius through 360 degrees of travel (or nearly so), palletizers, and similar applications where physical barriers might not be feasible (or might be easily circumvented).

What are some of the better technologies for guarding areas? I'm thinking that light curtains might be difficult to arrange in such a way to cover the area without undue obstruction. Are there motion detectors or other human sensing technologies that can protect areas on the order of tens of square feet?

Thanks in advance,

Ken,

We have the option to modify the working envelope of a robot by programming it. This helps the working of large robots in confined spaces and the envelope can be guarded easily unlike before.
