What does trip mean?

Hello sirs.

I'm new in automation, and perhaps the question looks like a kind of stupid ))) what means "trip" in cause and effect chart? is it the same like "stop"? and why it's called "trip"?

Trip generally refers to an unplanned, uncontrolled, "emergency" shutdown of a machine or process or piece of equipment. For example, if an excessive high vibration is detected on a piece of rotating equipment, it's customary to "trip" that piece of equipment by immediately interrupting or shutting off the flow of energy to the equipment, as opposed to an operator-initiated stop or shutdown in which an orderly and controlled stopping of the equipment or process is started and completed to a stopped condition.

A trip also results in a stopped condition, but usually it is not so orderly or controlled as its initiated when a potentially damaging or destructive condition or event is detected.

However, without understanding what equipment or process you are reviewing it's not possible to say for certain what trip means in your case. I have also seen trip used to mean an orderly shutdown, but usually only for simple, uncomplicated equipment or processes which don't have the possibility of damage or catastrophic failure.

You really need to understand how terms are used by examining them in the context in which they are used. It's very bad to assume a meaning that is very different from the one intended.

Hope this helps!
