Automation in Power generation stations

I have to discuss with a power generation plant (going to set up) in India about the use of automation in power generation stations.
SCADA is something which is the most important tool to monitor & control the various safety & critical sections of the station.

Please help me in knowing a bit more about other possibilities of use of automation in this application.

What makes you think SCADA is all that important in a power plant? We had well functioning power plants long before we had SCADA.

Automation (including SCADA) is mostly about driving costs down by reducing the amount of human action required and to make the tiny adjustments that are needed along the way that mimimize costs that it would be hard for humans to do on an ongoing basis.

There is also the ability to trip the system faster than a human being could that might well minimize damages in the event of some bad event occurring.
