How can I communicate with PLC 5/10 or PLC 5/15

I think all the PLC5 processors had an RS232 port included. Its the 25 pin d shell connector. The protocol is called DF1. If this port is not being used for anything else, there is no reason you cannot use it to communicate with an RS232 port on your laptop. The cable pinout can be found in the AB manual.

they call it a 1784CP10 cable, but you can make your own easily enough. it is basically a null modem cable.

normally you could use a usb to rs232 convertor with DF1 if you do not have an RS232 port built in to your laptop.

I believe that these PLC's also have a serial DF-1 connection. If so, we offer an interface that allows connection to the PLC using another serial communication protocol, such as Modbus. If this is of interest check here for our protocol list http://www.miille.com/curproto.htm or contact us directly at jmiille (at) miille (dot) com

Looking at the Quick Reference, I'm about 99% sure the DE9 connection on the front is DH+, not DF1. These old Classic PLC-5 processors didn't have serial ports. If there's a round pseudo-mini-DIN connector on the front, all you need is the 1784-U2DHP that Rockwell makes. If the PLC doesn't have that connector, you'll need to add an adapter to go from the mini-DIN on the U2DHP to the D-shell connector on the PLC. Here's a link to Grace's C-ABDH:

I just wanted to thumbs up your reply and let you know you can be 100%. The 9 pin connection in PLC5s is NOT a RS232 serial port. You are correct it is a proprietary configuration/communication protocol Data Highway Plus (DH+).
