I need to measure the wide of a fabric roll in an automatic mode as it is moving.

I was considering the use of laser scanners for ranging applications, but I was wondering if there would be a better option. The accuracy of the measure should be about 2-3 mm. measuring a roll of 2 meters wide.

are you currently measuring the fabric's thickness?

if there is a place where the fabric is relatively taut you might be able to put a spring loaded traveler along both sides and detect the relative position of each side. The difference between the positions is the width.

It seems unusual that fabric would not be the same width throughout the roll though.
