History of the problem:

The Gas turbine is GE frame 5 installed on 1969

On April 2015 an axial movement observed on the Load gear while the machine on load or without load, since then the machine was shut down till now.

As per the files and data available on the site there is a history of axial movements occurred on the machine. The load gear coupling was replaced by new one in 1996. then on 2004 repaired by some adjustment on clearances on the bearings led to re-operate the machine and return it back on line. nevertheless there was recommendation to replace the load gear coupling which is not done till now.

Now, there was no chance to start the unit due to unavailability of gas. the load gear inspection cover opened, they were no sign of wear for the appeared parts, oil DC pump started, the oil was sprayed uniformly on the gears.

I heard that the type of load gear has no thrust bearing on the low speed coupling (see data sheet), therefore this phenomenon can occur on this type of gear box.

The load gear should be replaced along with the four bearings in which clearances should be taken and compared with GE standard.

I need your input if you have such experience in your machines.

Many thanks
