Potential Risk for Speedtronic Cards

Hi to all

These days I'm working on a GE frame9 gas turbine with speedtronic mark4 control system(HGPI).

During battery decharging test (connecting load to battery for measuring the battery output through 3-5 hours until falling voltage to approximately 110V), we have to cut the battery from DC bus. So my question is: Is there any potential danger for speedtronis cards or generator and excitation panel cards with battery charger supply? regarding the battery charger output is not a pure dc current and there is some ripples?

No Speedtronic turbine control panel should ever be run directly off the battery charger output. Especially older units with older battery chargers; output capacitors fail over time and the battery actually serves to reduce output spikes from even a new charger; removing the battery from the circuit allows unfiltered battery charger output spikes to be directly applied to the Speedtronic power supplies. Most digital Speedtronic turbine control panel power supplies have an upper limit of approximately 140 VDC; some power supplies have automatic "crowbar" circuits to shut them off to protect against damage; others do not.

It's NEVER a good idea to power a Speedtronic turbine control panel directly from a 125 VDC battery charger--even if you witnessed OEM/packager personnel do it during commissioning (which many did and still do--because of alleged time constraints in commissioning and getting the battery installed and connected properly). If it doesn't cause immediate damage to the power supplies, it certainly weakens them resulting in premature failure as time goes by.

Hope this helps!
