Analog Input Module Question - RTS & RPI

I'm working with a Controllogix PLC and RSlogix 5000. I've noticed that I can set the RPI to a much lower period that the RTS. But what I wonder is why in the world would you ever want to do this? If the value inside the analog card can't possibly be updated any faster than the RTS, what would be the point of having the PLC sample it any more often than that? It seems minimum RPI should be greater than or equal to RTS.

This all assuming I have the definition of RTS and RPI correct. Perhaps (even probably) I do not.
