When measuring air flow, why does one take the cosign of the angle to gain the multiplier so to apply it to the velocity to correct it?

If the flow is in the direction X, and your sensor (assumed to be sensitive to pitch) is pitched up at some angle. The cosine of the pitch angle gives you the component of velocity in the X direction...

The vector component along the duct centerline is what you are after, most times.
