I can only suggest you try and go on the AC450 Controller course offered by ABB. The only other way is being taught by someone else at your workplace or teach yourself via the manuals.

The best way is definately an ABB course because they give you lots of hints and tips. Also if you crash the controller your cement plant will not crash too :)

Hi Hossam,

ABB AC450 is the older system, currently they have release the new hardware AC800 and the software is much easy to handle, it also more friendly to use. The software is compile to IEC61131 standard.

You may want to visit their web site for more detail.

Hope it help.

Hi Chris,

It is almost impossible to crash the controller due to a program failure. But there are a lot of traps on the way. And: This controller is not a simple PLC. It is a part of a complex Process Automation system and I agree with you 100%: a training course is more than a hint, it is a MUST.

I agree that it is almost impossible to crash a controller by using incorrect code. I was talking more about, "What happens if I press this button?". The good old trial and error method can be used on an offline system, and definitely not recommended for an online controller.

I recommend doing both the AC450 controller course and the operator station course (either the Advant or OperateIT depending on what operator stations you have).

No, the AC800 forms part of a new concept called Industrial IT.
Have a look at http://www.abb.com/industrialit.

You have to upgrade your AC450 to AC800 and translate the application programs. Some PC-elements doesn’t have equivalent Function Block in AC800, but you can build your own libraries with your own FB’s.

If upgrading, usually you can use your existing I/O’s. There are Communication Interfaces for remote S800 or local S100.
You can mix also in the plant AC450 with AC800.

Look for training at the ABB University in the service area of http://www.abb.com or contact with your local distributor.

ABB University is located in Wickliffe Ohio. Two years ago ABB laid off hundreds of people at this location and killed the training department and left one instructor that teaches the old Bailey products. Any other training is done by the tech support people on a demand basis and they have no field experience. There is one man in Columbus that trains on process portal and does a very poor job of it. I would be real careful of this product.

You are better off to upgrade your advant computers to later hp workstations. We can help.
