Alternatives to Using Elmo Servo Drives

"...what other alternative do we have for compact servos?"

Advanced Motion Controls is the most directly comparable I can think of.

There aren't a lot of other very small drives, but here are a few:
Copley Controls, Maxon, Infranor / Lourdes / Mesa, Quicksilver, Tamagawa-Seiki.

It also depends a bit on what you mean by "compact." In the below 1 kW range, if 110VAC or 220VAC single phase is okay, there are rather a lot of options. Applied Motion Products, Panasonic, Omron, Electrocraft, Oriental Motor, Mitsubishi Electric, Yaskawa.

Generally speaking, I don't think the question of which supplier to use is really a technical one. Rather, find a supplier you have a good working relationship with. As for "What Servo Drives fits what industry?" that's a little too broad a question. I can tell you that Yaskawa is probably the leader in servos shipped globally, although the last market share data I have is from 2003.
