I have had problems with very annoying noises from AC drive controlled motors and have increased the PWM base frequency in order to reduce or eliminate the noise. I have done this only when absolutely necessary as I was concerned about increasing the frequency and also increasing the chances of standing wave problems and spikes and all the other good stuff that happens with these drives. Perhaps I am getting concerned about nothing, but as you say, there doesnt seem to be any definitive answers out there. I increased a 40hp drive up to 8khz about a year ago and it or the motor have not yet protested. I also always make sure to install output and input chokes on all installations.
