Automating a robotic arm

I'm looking for ways to keep track of the movements of the arm I'm automating, I'm programming my siemens 216 processor, with step 7.

I've thought about using the high speed counter however, there are only two when I have five motors to keep track of, so I'm thinking of just opting for timers. I would like an idea of how to save the sequence and time of each motor on... so that I can Automate the movements, after a run through teaching...

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I need some more info on your setup to help.

1) what gives you arm position now (encoder, prox, etc.)?
2) what type of motors (servos, brake motors, etc.)?
3) what is the cycle time off the arm?
