brake resistor

I'm using an ac-drive to drive a motor with a brake resistor to dissipate the generated energy when the motor works as a generator. Can the brake resistor dissipate that energy for a long period of time (the motor works as generator for long period)?

That all depends on the power rating of the resistor and how well it is cooled or attached to a heat-sink or both. Just monitor the temperature of the resistor to see what it can take.

Yes, just take into account how much wattage you need to dissipate and size your braking resistor to about 2x or larger than you need (Maybe even cool it with a fan etc.) You also might look into a AC Regen unit that will take your excess bus voltage and put it back onto the AC Line. different drives vendors offer different solutions.
