What are the braking methods available for large 3 phase induction motors (more than 1250HP) when there is a power failure?

Responding to Tejas’ 10-Aug (20:53), a number of threads covering this topic can be found in the List Archives. However, I don’t believe that you will find anything for such large machine. If you are interested in exploring some approaches, then furnish information, i.e., motor and driven machine characteristics, especially motor and load inertia!

I'm assuming that it is too big for any feasable vfd, maybe theres another way to shunt it to brake it. Is this for a chiller or something?

Tejas please specify the following:

1-Type of the rotor.
Is it wound rotor? If so do you have access to the rotor winding terminals?

2-Do you use a a starter for that motor? what type?

3- What is the load for this motor?

Thank you([email protected])

Dear Gaven,

I can assure you that there are VFDs large enough to drive such a motor, however their price is even larger. :)
