I am working on a HVAC/BMS control project. Client has insisted on DDC controls for same. Can anybody guide me why DDC control is required for such application? Where can I find basic information on same?

Hi,

A few reasons for using DDC:

1. it's usually cheaper than a PLC solution

2. many controllers are available with canned applications which are particularly suited to HVAC CONTROL

3. the HMI products are already customised to suit HVAC applications

For more information you could look on the ASHRAE web site (http://www.ashrae.org/) or web sites for Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Siemens Building Automation, TAC, Alerton Technologies, etc.

I used to work for the Honeywell Building Systems group and DDC was just the acronym for Direct Digital Control. It just meant a software based system.

Answer
DDC provides flexibility of programming, testing and debugging. Also DDC's can communicate to a central PC. For more info, check out the site of major companies like Honeywell, Invensys, Johnson, Siemens etc.
