communication between atmega8535 and PC through modbus protocol

i'm looking for info on how to communicate b/w the atmega8535 microcontroller and PC thru the modbus protocol with the key requirements in my project being the baud rate, frame format, function code to be used.

Please help me asap. Hoping for a reply at the earliest!
