I am trying to find analogies for the communication terms.

Do you agree with the followings? If not, please advise.

1) Communication Protocol (BACnet, LonWork, Modbus, etc) = language (English, German, etc)

2) Remote Telemetry Units (RTU), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), MS/TP, IP, Ethernet = the way to pack the message

3) Communication Medium (RS-485 cable, Ethernet cable, etc) = the vehicle to deliver the message

A colleague calls them
- Mules (packs the bits and carries them)
- Rules (protocol, who talks, who listens, error handling) and
- Tools (application level that deals with the data)
