I would appreciate for the advice from experienced in control systems for offshore platforms. Is it necessary to provide fiber optic communication between FPSO and offshore platform(central process facility)? I thought that satellite communication would be enough, but customer proposed to use fiber optic. What kind of data is required to transfer in this case?

 

It would be data that is deemed safety critical data..who knows what the satellite is doing with your info
Usually client request ..because of some past incident
Or as is very typical for the offshore industry...its somebody with a very big ego flying the I am in charge flag
... exactly how do you do a risk assessment on a satellite....with solar flares and what not...
