My company recieved a (2) reciprocating Natural gas compressor packages driven by a 5000 hp medium voltage motors. One thing that caught my eye was that there were vibration switches mounted on the motor and the compressor. Some refer to these devices as "Earth quake switches" I refer to them as "Run to failure devices". I agree that they do have their applications, yet I do not feel this is one of them. I would like to propose continuous vibration monitoring that could easily be added to the local ControlLogix PLC that serves as unit control. Am I overthinking the situation or is vibration monitoring a better way to protect the company's investment?
