Critical Turbine control data over Ethernet

Curious George

I am wondering about a proposal to let a machine know the fuel consumption of the others in a multi machine process over ethernet. The machine needs this critical information to change the value of the Wobbe index. There is one meter for 6 machines hence the volume downstream of the Wobbe index meter is different for each machine and the time delay applicable depends on how many machines are running.
Is transmitting this temp control critical data over ethernet considered a good idea?

Given that if the ethernet switch fails and the fuel flow data is not available, the Tmax temp calculation will be wrong. Is ethernet considered reliable enough? I am a little out of touch but in my day all critical values were hardwired into IO. I understand that any opinion is qualified and I don't expect anyone to provide detailed expert advice on limited data, but opinion is sought on the concept.
