CRT Monitors display systems for Instruments

I just want to know more about display devices (CRT monitor VDUs) for instrumentation systems.

Is microprocessor must to interface them with VDU? Or just I can use CRT terminals as a local control with my instrumentation systems without interfacing with processor??
