Hello list,

Until now, comparisons between bus systems did not go much further than comparing them at about 10 properties (to make it fit snugly on 1 A4). But this is hardly sufficient in case one needs to make a proper comparison. Systems for which the spec's are several thousand pages have more properties different than they have in common. That is why I started with these four systems: Profibus, Interbus, Ethernet and AS-Interface, and made a comparison between them on many, many more properties than just 10. It's now 3.5 page A4 in a small font...

Read it for yourself at http://ourworld.cs.com/rahulsebos/buscomparison.doc
(Word 2000, ca. 80K). Please let me know in case you'd like to have more systems added, find errors, or want more details added.

And, while you're at it, take one link further and look at the collection of links to almost 300 industrial networks and bus systems... I've started adding small descriptions of the networks shown.

Oh yes, vendors or publishers: contact me first for any non-personal use.

Dear All,

Comparisons are fine! I like the referenced comparison. This forum provides a huge source of helpful information. Keep going.

I have just published another comprehensive comparison of SCADA protocols and information modeling methods for RTUs, substations, ...:

Comparison of IEC 60870-5-101/-103/-104, DNP3,
and IEC 60870-6-TASE.2 with IEC 61850
