I would like to develop a settling curve and a flux vs. concentration curve which will help me optimize they way we operate our thickeners. The slurry that we are processing is opaque (not clear) and it is not easy to establish the interface between the clean solution and the compressed solids phase. I would like to know If there is any latest technology to determine the settling properties of such a slurry. If you have any agents in South Africa, please give me their contacts. I would like to also acquire some of the software that you probably use for simulation and optimization purposes.

Well, one of the most commonly used methodologies is the Imhoff Cone, and its associated method, as described in the latest edition of Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (available from AWWA and WEF). Basically, it is a time-based settling test.
