dsp tms320c31 testing problem

After downloading the bootloader/test code for the c31 from a host computer the dsp should send back certain data for the host to confirm. However, as part of this data that's returned via FIFOs, it always includes an extra byte (46H) when there is a problem running the test code. I am beginning to think that this extra byte is some kind of error code generated by the dsp itself because this byte is returned for a variety of address/data bus causes, ie I have resolved the problem by correcting shorts or unsoldered pins on different add/data lines. Can anybody please let me know if it is indeed the dsp indicating a problem executing the code. Thanks!
