I just noticed that I didn't include what I'm converting. The blocks are from acad 2005. When I import them into Eplan they never line up with the grid, and I pretty much have to redraw them. Also is there a way to set wiring labels in the middle of a conductor? Other than a regular textbox? Thanks a lot.

 

When you convert AutoCAD drawings into EPLAN, it will be just a drawing and has no logic. The conductor number can be set in the EPLAN part management. Just go to the part management and select a cable. Go to the function template tabs and you can set your conductor number there!

If you want good value, and your customers don't demand EPLAN (there is NO software compatible both directions with EPLAN), try PCschematic (www.pcschematic.com).

I use EPLAN due to customer's demands. It is a very good and very complete package and all reports and cross-references are ALWAYS correct, no need to check. Big disadvantage is its price (around 13,000 euros for full version - compact and select versions also exist).
Before we used PCschematic, which can (almost) do the same as EPLAN but which costs about 1/5.

They have a demo version.

 

I've used several drawing programs and for me EPlan has worked the best. It helps with the addressing for automation directly and It has an extensive library of ready to use components. It is expensive I'll give you that but the support system is great. Other programs like Zuken E3 is cheaper but they have the worst support for the program ever and the program is full of holes and doesn't give me a lot of freedom of usage. I have had experience with other CAD programs as well and many times they work like the support at zuken E3 "sell sell sell..." after you have paid they just don't care especially if you only have a few licenses.

The funniest thing happened when I send the support at E3 an e-mail and tried to give some constructive criticism. They actually send an e-mail to the head of the office complaining about my criticism. I got a good laugh when my boss showed me the e-mail.

I know this reply is late to say the least, but I still thought that I'd throw my two cents in.

I worked for a company that used a software for their one-line diagrams and CWDs called LoadMatic. It did a fantastic job... it was NEC compliant. It also did voltage drop, breaker and starter sizing, raceway fill and sizing, and some other cool features I remember stumbling over one at a time. The company that created it was called GSN, not to be confused with the Game Show Network, the whole name was GSN Technologies. You can still find them on the web at www.gsntechnologies.com

 

I currently use EPLAN Electric P8, I have kept the support contract for several years.

Never had any problems with support, never had any problems that the support line couldn't fix.

My company bought through a re-seller, but at the same price as from EPLAN UK. (I called lots of places, all the same price) The support line is manned by EPLAN personnel trained by EPLAN (That's what they told me).

The new Data Portal is also a great time saver and I believe is worth the extra money.(300,00 parts to download in EPLAN format.

You sound like a salesman for it. I looked at EPlan and saw nothing wrong with its performance, but it seemed quite odd that for a software package that is supposed to be in such wide use why can I find so little training material available on it? For example, if you go to Amazon and look up AutoCAD you will find hundreds of titles. If you look up Eplan you will find about 2 or 3, and one of those is in German, I think.

 

I've used the former Electronics Workbench, now NI Multi-Sim.
