Hi, I wonder if you can help me. I want to build a circuit that will tell me if there is activity on my ethernet cable. In other words, if no activity, a green LED would be on. If activity then a red LED would be on. I would probably monitor the cable leading between the network card and router or switch. A power transister would be helpful to increase the LED. Would A 74HC14 be the right choise? any help would be appreciated...JR

 

What are you trying to accomplish? I'm looking for your end result/bigger picture goal. You can do this in software with free tools (Wireshark or others) or in hardware with devices like a Fluke.

Thanks for your response. I don't want it to be done with software, nor a fluke. I want to accomplish this using an electronic circuit perhaps with a 74HC14 or other parts. The simpler the better. this will then drive another circuit. All I am looking for is an led to turn on or off thru a transistor.
