What things should be improved & technology advancement to compete with fast growing world of automation.

Have you read or are you aware of IEC 601131?

Basically, Programmable Logic Controllers are not meant for operators. They're meant to be encapsulated boxes which are carefully set up by a process engineer. Better engineering tools to match the PLC's platform might be an improvement.

For example, a tool to develop drop in objects compatible with both the PLC and a SCADA and HMI system would be nice.

However, I think the PLC has already become quite complex. Making it operator friendly is not the issue. Better software tools for the process engineers is.

ISaGRAF has IEC-61131 + Flowchart programming and has simple HMI software as well...
