hardness or conductivity-which to measure

how do these two items relate. are they basically the same thing but measured with different values. is there a ratio from one value to the other?

They are different.

Generally, hardness refers to the concentration of calcium and magnesium salts in water. While calcium and magnesium contribute to the conductivity of water, other ions, such as sodium, can contribute to conductivity as well. You may have high conductivity while hardness is low or you may have high readings for both, depending on the characteristics of the fluid.
