Heater PID autotune

Hi,

I'm making my own software for controlling about 20 heater zones. I'm using Beckhoff modules via EtherCAT for I/O. For heater control I use separate Elotech PID controller that drives SSRs and communicates via RS485 with my software. This PID controller has standard autotune function for setting PID parameters. This autotune function basically puts a disturbance into system and then calculates PID parameters. My question is what kind of method is normally used for autotune? Is this some standard method or is different between manufacturers? I would really like some guidelines so I could program autotune feature by myself.
