How do Siemens RTU and control station talk to each other?

Hi all,

any help regarding info on how Siemens RTU and controls stations talk to each other (initial handshaking) please? Has this got to do anything with the application layer? Or do they follow normal TCP/IP handshaking procedure?

I am planning to design a protocol gateway and so analysing different protocols.
