How to check the busfault in Siemens S7?

When you are using a PLC with a lot of remote I/O stations connected through Profibus, and you find you are getting bus fault, what is the best way to find out which portion of the system is making the problem? Either the remote station or the Profibus cable might be making the problem. Is it possible to check it in steps?
