I need to be able to know whether sand is flowing to the nozzles on my sand blasting equipment. I only need a yes or no decision from a sensor not flow rate. I am open to any sugestion

Try a flowmeter, and when it reaches a medium or higher flow, the conditon for the sensor is yes
Otherwise you can try an IR-Barrier or a particle detector

If you can measure the weight off the container holding the blastersand continuously over time Then you will now how much sand is going out True the nozzle per second f.ex.

And if you want a digital signal that indicates a certain level of sandflow you can use a level switch that use the output from the previous calculation as input.

SMC makes a flow sensor that can fit on the outside of the pipe or hopper that detects movement inside from the sound it makes. Pretty cool technology, I'm sure there are other mfgs making the same sort of thing. We used a bunch of them on a grain handling application to check for plugging canditions - they worked amazing. Good luck!
