I need a colored graphic HMI approved for Class1 Div1

Does anybody know a HMI that is approved for Class1 Div1 with a UL or FM certificate. I'm looking for a text display as well as for a graphic (480x640) VGA. I don't want a industrial PC but a slave terminal that I can connect via fieldbus to my PLC. I don't like these purged versions I'm more interested in an Intrisically safe or similar system.

Thanks for your help

I'd call Red Lion and see if they have one for their Paradigm series. If they don't, take a standard unit (either Red Lion or whoever) and
put it in a NEMA 4/7/9 enclosure (not purged). When you have to use its pushbuttons, you'll need to bring them out to NEMA 7 pushbuttons.

I have two problems with this.

First, you are right to not want to use a purged HMI panel, unless you can get one you can use without venting the purge to get to the buttons....They _are_ available.

But why in the world would you want to habitually send an operator into a Class 1 Div 1 area to look at, or program an HMI panel? That just isn't good safe practice, IMHO. Put the HMI in a safe area...that's what they are designed for.

I did an investigation on this a few months ago. Check with: Bartec and Stahl.

Thanks Walt for your reply

I guess the main problem is the system you use in the US for hazardous classification. In Europe we use the zone system instead of the class division system. The big advantage of the zone is the splitting of the Div 1 into Zone 0 and Zone 1. So it's absolutely normal for an operator to work in a Zone 1 area. I can't see any disadvantages using a HMI mounted next to the machine. It makes it easier to check the status, to change parameters and also for maintenance or manual operations it's a lot safer to operate the equipment while you can see what happens. But anyway it wasn't just my idea for this concept, my client wants this graphic display in the Class1 Div1. So if you have any helpful information where to get such a HMI, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance
Alex

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but you might consider Pilz. (www.pilz.com) They do a range of Monitors and Industrial PCs for Classified areas.

Hello,

if you are looking for a MMI for Div. 1 with FM or UL cert. and 480x640 with a programming tool for Windows 95/98/NT, we can offer you such a MMI. It is our ET-8 operator panel. You can contact me or visit our web-page.

Have you tried Ex-tronics, MTE or Stahl? There are others but I cannot remember them.

I am commissioning in Denmark at the moment, so I don't have the references at hand.

This question is always coming up on the list so you might check the archives (though I'm not sure if they have a search engine).

(*Moderator's note: Yes. Control.com's search goes back to November 1999. The search button on www.ctc-control.com accesses archives ~3 years back.*)

Otherwise a trawl through the web search engines or the back copies of C&I will help.
