Having used both the ignition torch types, I recommend using the Spark plug over heater in order to (1) reduce contamination, (2) reduce leakage.
(1) DC heater construction has more electrical elements to it that will contaminate the catalyst surface over time; and
(2) Some heater moves vertically up and down during start-up. Such a construction has a packing on the shaft that tends to leak methanol vapour from the top of reactor.
The key to a consistent start-up using the Spark plug is controlling the Fuel/Air ratio; whereby concentration of methanol, level and temperature in the evaporator must be set correctly.
