Interfacing of a Transmitter directly to a PC

I want to be able to interface field instruments (Transmitters, TC, RTD) directly to a PC with the help of some device that communicates between the instruments and the PC. I don't need to do controlling but only see the reading from my computer. How can it be done?

Many transmitters (and other field devices) support the HART communication protocol, which can be used with a "HART modem" [serial interface] and software such as PACTware to obtain readings and other information using a PC.
 
It’s actually pretty easy to obtain basic data monitoring software without having to spend money on elaborate control functions that you don’t need. In fact, ICP-DAS USA has free software, called EZ Data Logger, which works with their data acquisition devices, and you can add in other companies’ instruments.
