I am an Electronic Engineer who has relatively no knowledge of PLC's and PLC programming but am keen to learn. I would be grateful if anybody could advise which is the best system to learn the subject and how to approach it.

Greg.

Since you are new to PLC's it is best to study about the introduction to PLC's.So many PLC manufactures offering the courses for beginners to experts. You can contact PLC manufacturers like SIEMENS, OMRON, ALLEN BRADLEY regarding the courses they are offering. So that you can select the course suitable to you.

A really excellent site is The Learning Pit.com, a veryy creative a well worth checking out, let me know what you think, Kurt

Hi. I'd recommend some introductory courses by market leaders eg Rockwell Automation. They have courses for all level from managers seeking intros to high level programming with practical thrown in as well. Good start to take u off the ground. With electrical background this should be a breeze.

One place, and actually one of the most overlooked, is your local community college. They mey not have the most up to date software, but it will give you a good basic knowledge to build on.

Another resource is the tradesmen where you work. The controls specialists and/or electricians are a vast wealth of information.

Greg, contact me off-line and I will tell you how I got started and point you towards some documents.

The only big problem now is IEC tools versus traditional tools. Not just ladder or instruction list any more.
