Low cost stepper control with CAN

I have a requirement for a linear motion to be controlled by either a stepper or servo motor that requires a CAN interface. The velocity of the load to be driven is constant (in both fwd and rev directions), except during acceleration and deceleration. The load is to be moved to specific positions. The motor power needs to be around 100W or so. The controller needs +ve and -ve limit detection as well as a home sensor input. Feedback of position is to be achieved using an encoder mounted on the load (not directly on the back of the motor).

I could use a full blown position controller but these are expensive, large and aimed at larger power motors.
