I am gathering information on methods employed
in arriving at manhours actually employed in
hardware & software development projects with
multiple engineers working on multiple projects.

Do the individual engineers have to make
weekly/monthly entries on the time spent on the
projects ?

Are there some software/methods generally used ?

I have used MicroSoft Project for several years for this purpose, and have found it to be quite useful. It contains (in its sample files) programming, etc. to track projects quite nicely.
