In an energy automation system information about metering (current, voltage, energy, etc.) are sent to the station computer by Modbus RTU protocol. since time stamping of events is a neccessity in the application at hand could this protocol be used for the integration of metering equipment to the automation system?

Of course you can, but the capability of using this protocol depends on the device you use since different devices might use different protocol.

 

This sort of task is already done but the meters are interrogated by the host. Have a look at http://www.powerlogics.com and check out the meters and monitoring software. For fast events, meters may log to onboard memory (timestamped) for later upload.
