Modbus RS-485 over coax

To use existing cables, we plan on running Modbus over coaxial cabling (for about 500')... Any reason this should be a problem?

As far as Modbus is concerned, it's not a problem because the Modbus spec makes no mention of the physical layer. You can run Modbus over chicken wire if you want, and it's still Modbus.

Just make sure your physical layer transceivers (whatever you remaining physical layer will be) are compatible with your coax. I'm no signals expert, but if you plan on connecting coax wire to an RS485 or RS232 transceiver or something like that, It may work, but I'm not sure I would overly trust such a system.
