I have been interfacing PC's in none standard ways for years and these days its getting tricky to do with all these fancy frills interfaces that require windows drivers.
One thing I have been toying with is using a USB port as a bit bashed port so I dont have to use specific USB hardware, I did see a small article on the subject. Thinking back the guy was in the USA and had 8 PCF 8574's and 8 8574A's directly connected to the bus with LEDS on each output giving him 128 programmable bits, costly way to do it but it did look good.
