Mould Level Control Problems

In billet caster plant we often face the problem of strand breakout due to mould level suddenly going down or not maintaining. we have separated the cable of eletromotive stirrer and MLC counters. Problems reduced but still at times its showing spikes and production is getting affected. It's an open casting machine.

What could be the other reasons affecting this?

You do not explain the type of Caster vertical/horizontal, the level controller type/brand, the size of product cast and so on.

Thanks Chris for your reply.

Its a curved caster and billets will be withdrawn from withdrawal drive and a straightening afterwards with the help of a straightener cylinder and motor. For nould level measurement berthold system in in use.

Have you changed the level detector with a known good spare? the crystal and/or electronics in detector may be have aged and more susceptible to electrical noise.

Has the radioactive source rod reduced in output counts over its half life and now the resolutions of source output counts to mold level is low and more reactive to noise or background radiation?

Is there possible slip in the withdrawal rolls due to low hydraulic pressure on the cylinder that lowers the upper roll, causing the level to intermittently drop?

Is the correct quantity or grade of mold lube (oil or powder) used?
