Dear Friends,

First, I´d like to hear your experiences using MS-Access databases for data logging in interaction with SCADA packages (such as iFix, Intouch, etc.).

And also discuss security problems and data integrity concerning the use of local databases, with the additional info from the pharma related 21 CFR Part 11 standard for the management of Electronic Records and Electronic Signatures.

Hope it can be also useful for others,
Cláudio Pires.

Can you even use msaccess for such purposes? I did not know it had any audit tracking facilities.

MSDE (MicroSoft Data Engine) is a more powerful database to data logging, and it's free. It's a mini distribution of MS-SQL Server, fully compatible with this. P-CIM scada is compatible with this, via ODBC connections.

Forget MS Access or MSDE as you will have ongoing maintenance problems. You will be tied to the developer who designed the database as each MS Acess is bespoke.
A typical databse will need to be archived every 3 or 4 months.
Most of the top automation software suppliers have MS SQL based systems that are almost off the shelf with limited development eg Wonderware InSQL or AB RSSQL.
