We have an application for monitoring the absolute position of gates at a hydroelectric projects. The measurement point is multi-turn location and we want a Modbus RTU communications path to the device. Any ideas or products suggestions would be helpful.

use GELMA make Abosolute encoders (RAO series) .
communications is serial suitable for modbus protocol.

 

A rotary encoder will sense the position. Most PLCs can easily interface to a rotary encoder and some of these have a serial port with modbus protocol( like modicon, b&r) . Not a cheap solution but almost of the shelf.
