I think that you want to make some sorts of ActiveX components to your HMI system.

A good book to start with I think is "Microsoft Visual Basic 6 Development" ISBN = 0-7356-0900-4.

I tried it myself and I was a total novice and
after that book I could create my own HMI objects.
